But the same technical DNA that powers a racing drone \u2014 precise control, stable flight, cameras and sensors \u2014 is behind a much less flashy but equally impressive revolution: precision agriculture. More and more farms in Spain are swapping the tractor and the spray backpack for a drone that flies over the crop, analyzes it, and treats only where it’s needed. Here’s how the technology works and who’s behind it in Spain.<\/p>\n

Technology<\/span><\/p>\n

Two drones, one goal: precision<\/h2>\n

A professional agricultural drone isn’t that different, at its core, from an FPV drone: motors, a flight controller, GPS\/RTK and a camera. The difference lies in the payload and the purpose, and there are usually two complementary types of flight.<\/p>\n

The mapping drone<\/strong> (for example, a DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral) flies over the crop with multispectral cameras and generates NDVI maps \u2014 the vegetation-health index \u2014 able to detect water stress, pests or nutrient deficiencies before they’re visible to the naked eye.<\/p>\n

The treatment drone<\/strong> (for example, a DJI Agras) applies pesticide or fertilizer only where the map indicates, with centimeter-accurate RTK positioning, instead of treating the whole field uniformly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Why it’s growing so fast<\/h2>\n

The numbers explain much of the interest: treating only where needed cuts phytosanitary product use by up to 30% compared to uniform spraying, while also saving water and labor hours.<\/p>\n

It also solves a very physical problem: access. On slopes, terraces or hillside plots a tractor can’t reach, a drone can cover the crop in minutes. In crops like bananas or steep vineyards, that means replacing risky manual work with a short, controlled flight.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Regulation<\/span><\/p>\n

What Spanish law says<\/h2>\n

Using drones to apply pesticides in Spain is regulated by Royal Decree 1311\/2012, on the sustainable use of plant protection products. It’s not a legal grey area \u2014 operating legally means meeting several requirements.<\/p>\n

The four things that separate a serious operator from an improvised one are: an AESA pilot certificate (categories A1\/A3 and A2), official registration as a UAS operator, a pesticide applicator license, and civil liability insurance for unmanned aircraft. If you’re hiring a service, asking for these four is the fastest way to check it’s trustworthy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Real case<\/span><\/p>\n

Who’s doing it in the Canary Islands: AgroDron Canarias<\/h2>\n

A good example of this technology applied in the field is AgroDron Canarias<\/strong>, based in Santa Cruz de La Palma. Behind it is Juan, a drone pilot certified since 2015 \u2014 eleven years of experience \u2014 and a farmer himself, covering the whole of the Canary Islands with two lines of work: NDVI mapping with a DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral and precision treatments with a DJI Agras T50.<\/p>\n

He specializes in the archipelago’s signature crops: bananas as the flagship crop, vineyards on volcanic terraces a tractor can’t reach, and avocados. He also works with mango, potato, lettuce, protea and other horticultural, tropical and ornamental crops. One of his real cases is the aerial treatment of the Bodega Vega Norte vineyard, on volcanic terraces in La Palma.<\/p>\n

He meets the four legal requirements mentioned above: AESA-certified pilot, registered UAS operator, pesticide applicator license, and active civil liability insurance.<\/p>\n
